5 Fast Safety Tips Every ATV Rider Should Know
Now that we're in the heart of summer, more ATV drivers are taking to the trails. While riding an ATV can be fun, it's important that you're taking the proper precautions to keep your ride from becoming dangerous.
Whether you're new to driving an all-terrain vehicle or you've been riding one for years, consider the following safety tips when you're out ATV trail riding.
- Always wear the right gear. This safety tip is crucial during the summer months. Some ATV drivers feel the need to forego their safety gear during the summer because it's hot, choosing instead to go for shorts, sneakers, and no helmet. However, the dangers of driving your ATV without safety gear are the same whether it's hot outside or not. Always wear a Department of Transportation (DOT) compliant helmet, goggles, gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and over-the-ankle boots when you're riding your ATV.
- Avoid paved roads. According to the American Automobile Association, the summer months are considered the 100 Deadliest Days for drivers. That said, while some states allow ATVs on paved roads, it's unsafe for you to drive on them. Driving an ATV on a paved road puts you at greater risk of getting into a car accident. Your ATV is designed for off-road use, which means they can easily collide with other vehicles and overturn. Stick to off-roading and ATV trails.
- Drive your ATV with the right number of people. It's all too easy to want to bring along a passenger on your ATV when you're out having summer fun. But unless your ATV is designed to carry more than one person, it's best to leave your friends off your vehicle. When you ride with a passenger on a single-rider vehicle, you increase the risk of getting into an accident because you're more likely to flip over.
- Only ride your ATV on designated trails. Some folks have a big back yard that lets them ride their ATVs around. But it's important that you're not riding your ATV in an area that's not meant for your vehicle. If you leave your property to go riding, be sure you're only using your ATV on designed trails. And, when you do, drive your ATV at a safe speed. Speeding and other reckless ATV driving can put your life, and the lives of others, at risk. Your ATV might not be a car, but it's still a heavy machine and it's not a toy. The same rules that apply to the road apply to your ATV on the trail.
